Saudi Ports Authority announces new shipping service to improve maritime connectivity with Africa
In a strategic move to enhance trade movement and solidify Saudi Arabia’s position as a global logistics hub, the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has revealed the introduction of a new shipping service by German container transportation firm Hapag-Lloyd. The new route, named JDX, will link the Jeddah Islamic Port to African harbors such as Tangier in Morocco and Damietta in Egypt through regular weekly trips with a capacity of up to 4,253 twenty-foot equivalent units.
This initiative aligns with the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy to improve supply-chain movement and boost Saudi Arabia’s ranking in international indicators. The recent launch of the NRS service by Folk Maritime connecting Jeddah to the northern Red Sea further indicates growth in the Kingdom’s maritime sector.
Additionally, Mawani’s partnership with MEDLOG to establish an integrated logistics zone in Jeddah aims to provide 400 direct and indirect job opportunities and train national staff in the logistics services sector. The project, with an investment value expected to reach up to SR175 million ($46.6 million), includes an integrated services site for container maintenance and inspection to enhance the port environment’s safety and reduce carbon emissions.
The recognition of Jeddah Islamic Port with international awards, such as the “Advanced Infrastructure” award at the “Landmarks in Logistics Summit 2023,” highlights the port’s distinguished infrastructure and variety of shipping services offered. These developments signify a promising future for maritime connectivity between Saudi Arabia and Africa.
