Riyadh Med Students Take Charge in Desert Clean-Up – Must See!

Alfaisal University’s Green Team Takes on Desert Clean-Up at Khararah Lake

In a mission to combat plastic waste and land pollution, the Green Team of the Medical Students’ Association at Alfaisal University organized a clean-up at the famed Khararah Lake site in Riyadh.

Led by passionate student activists, the Green Team aims to raise awareness and tackle climate change issues within the medical community. Their goal is to implement eco-friendly solutions, preserve the Kingdom’s natural environment, and advocate for sustainable practices while highlighting the impact of climate change on human health.

Sana Butt, head of the Green Team and a medical student at Alfaisal University, shared her thoughts on the importance of the clean-up event.

“Our experience was not only enjoyable but also enlightening, reinforcing our belief in the importance of inspiring others to take action in caring for our environment,” Butt expressed.

She emphasized the power of collective action, stating, “By demonstrating that cleaning up can be both easy and fun, especially when done as a group activity, we aim to encourage more individuals to join in these efforts.”

Butt stressed the significance of individual contributions to environmental conservation, urging others to embrace a green, eco-friendly lifestyle within their communities.

Partnering with The Big Clean-up, a local NGO in Riyadh, the Green Team engaged in the social activity to restore natural landscapes and promote environmental stewardship. Layla Raddaoui, a third-year medical student at Alfaisal University, highlighted the impact of simple sustainable habits on waste reduction and resource conservation.

During the clean-up at Khararah Lake, participants were astonished by the abundance of discarded plastic water bottles littering the area, underscoring the urgent need for eco-conscious practices.

Situated southwest of Riyadh, Khararah Lake is a picturesque desert oasis popular for family outings and camping trips. Visitors indulge in activities such as horse riding, camping, and camel rides amidst golden sand dunes.

Looking ahead, the Green Team plans to expand its outreach beyond campus borders to educate a wider audience on environmental sustainability and its societal implications.
