Saudi Arabia’s Cinema Industry Booms, Generating Nearly $1 Billion in Revenue

In a remarkable six-year span since the opening of its first cinemas, Saudi Arabia’s big screen sector has raked in a staggering SR3.7 billion ($986 million) in revenue, as per government data.

Rapid Growth and Success in the Entertainment Sector

The General Authority for Media Regulation reported that the industry sold over 61 million tickets from April 2018 to March of the current year, showcasing the success of the sector. During this period, 1,971 films were screened, including 45 local productions, highlighting the increasing popularity of entertainment within the Kingdom.

Aligning with Vision 2030 Goals

This significant growth reflects Saudi Arabia’s quick embrace of cultural activities, in line with its Vision 2030 goals to diversify the economy and improve quality of life. Hanaa Al-Omair, president of the Saudi Cinema Association, noted the rapid expansion of the country’s cinema market, positioning it as the most rapidly growing market in the Middle East.

Support Measures and Infrastructure Expansion

Vision 2030 is driving specific support measures for the entertainment sector, with aims to contribute over $23 billion to the GDP and create more than 100,000 jobs by 2030. The data also showcases the growth of cinema infrastructure across the nation, with 66 movie houses, 618 screens, and 63,373 seats operated by six companies in 22 cities.

Optimism and Future Plans

Al-Omair expressed optimism about the industry’s trajectory, emphasizing that it is heading in the right direction. As part of efforts to boost Saudi Arabia’s cinematic culture, the association announced the release of the first 22 books for the Saudi Cinema Encyclopedia, with plans to publish 100 books in the first year. The initial releases will coincide with the 10th Saudi Film Festival scheduled for May 2-9.
