Discover the Red Sea’s Massive Coral Restoration Project!

Revolutionizing Coral Restoration: KCRI Launches the World’s Largest Nursery

In a groundbreaking collaboration, scientists at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and NEOM have unveiled the first nursery of the KAUST Coral Restoration Initiative (KCRI).

The Largest Coral Restoration Project in the World

The KCRI is not just any project—it is the largest coral restoration initiative in the world, marking a significant milestone in global reef restoration efforts. With its primary nursery now operational and a second facility in the works, both located in the Red Sea, the project is set to make waves in the conservation community.

A Game-Changer in Coral Restoration Efforts

Situated on the coast of NEOM in northwest Saudi Arabia, the nursery is poised to revolutionize coral restoration with its impressive production capacity of 40,000 corals per year. Serving as a pioneering pilot facility, researchers will use the project as a blueprint for large-scale initiatives, including the world’s largest land-based coral nursery.

Scaling Up for Success

At the same site, an advanced coral nursery is in the works, boasting a capacity ten times larger than the primary facility to nurture a staggering 400,000 corals annually. The ambitious project is scheduled for completion by December 2025, signaling a new era in coral restoration efforts.

Preserving Marine Ecosystems for Future Generations

Coral reefs, home to 25 percent of known marine species despite covering less than 1 percent of the sea floor, are critical to marine ecosystems. With up to 90 percent of global coral reefs at risk of severe heat stress by 2050, the urgency of conservation efforts cannot be overstated.

A Bold Vision for the Future

Professor Tony Chan, president of KAUST, emphasized the need for industrial-scale processes to reverse the current rate of coral reef degradation. The initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, highlighting the country’s commitment to marine conservation and innovative restoration methods.

Championing Marine Environmental Systems

Nadhmi Al-Nasr, CEO of NEOM, underscored the importance of coral reefs as vital marine environmental systems. Through the partnership with KAUST, the initiative aims to raise awareness about the value of coral reef preservation for future generations, paving the way for a sustainable future.
