NASA and Saudi Space Agency Delegations Visit Prince Sultan University

A fascinating panel session titled “Beyond Earth: Journeys to the Stars” brought together NASA administrator Bill Nelson and Saudi astronauts Rayannah Barnawi, Ali Al-Ghamdi, and Mariam Fardous at Prince Sultan University. The aim was to engage with students on the future of human missions in space and share their own experiences.

The discussion also delved into encouraging the university’s students to be part of the Kingdom’s aspirations in the space field. Mohammed Al-Tamimi, CEO of Saudi Space Agency, and US Ambassador to the Kingdom Michael Ratney were also present at the event.

In an interview with Arab News, Nelson emphasized the significance of space missions, stating, “When we go into space, we have to invent and create new things, and that helps us advance our standard of living here on earth.”

Nelson highlighted examples of technological advancements from space technology, such as the camera in cell phones developed by NASA. He also mentioned the potential for breakthroughs in pharmaceutical research and zero gravity on the International Space Station.

Saudi Arabia has already established itself as a prominent player in the space industry, according to Nelson. Ahmed Yamani, president of Prince Sultan University, shared plans for a new college of space and aviation in collaboration with the Saudi Space Agency to stay at the forefront of advancements in these areas.

During his visit, Nelson also discussed deepening cooperation in the space sector with Munir Eldesouki, president of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology. Strategic partnerships in space were also on the agenda during talks between Saudi Space Agency Chairman Abdullah Al-Swaha and Nelson.
