Wadi AlFann Publications Launches Two Books in AlUla

DUBAI: AlUla-based Wadi AlFann Publications has unveiled two captivating books — “Oasis of Stories” by Saudi artist Manal AlDowayan and “The Desert Field Guide” by US artist Mark Dion.

“Oasis of Stories” showcases a collection of drawings gathered from AlDowayan’s workshops with communities in AlUla, involving over 700 Saudi women. These artworks were a highlight at the Venice Biennale, representing various facets of the women’s lives and the rich tapestry of their culture.

“The Desert Field Guide” by Mark Dion

Dion’s book serves as a resource for both visitors and locals, offering insights into the natural history of AlUla and its evolving status as a cultural hub. Describing the deserts of AlUla as places of stunning beauty and unique life forms, Dion aims to spark a sense of wonder and appreciation for the desert landscape.

AlDowayan and Dion recently hosted a panel discussion at the Venice Biennale, delving into their latest releases and sharing their perspectives on the importance of community participation in art. They also shed light on the captivating desert environment of AlUla.

Upcoming ‘Cultural Destination’ in AlUla

Wadi AlFann’s showcase at the Venice Biennale featured artworks by the first five artists commissioned for the upcoming ‘cultural destination’ in the AlUla valley. Scheduled to open in late 2026, this project covers 65 square kilometers and aims to offer a unique artistic experience to visitors.

In a statement to Arab News, AlDowayan expressed her appreciation for the shared humanity and the importance of preserving cultural heritage, climate awareness, and linguistic diversity. She emphasized the need to redefine cultural narratives beyond Western influences.
