Emirati Creative Hoor Al-Qasimi to Lead the 2026 Biennale of Sydney

DUBAI: The Biennale of Sydney made a significant announcement this week, revealing that Emirati creative Hoor Al-Qasimi will take on the role of artistic director for the 2026 edition.

The upcoming 25th edition of the biennale is scheduled to run from March 7 to June 8, promising a showcase of artistic brilliance.

Established in 1973, the Biennale of Sydney has solidified its reputation as one of the most enduring exhibitions globally, marking its place as the pioneer biennale in the Asia-Pacific region.

Al-Qasimi’s Impressive Track Record in the Art World

Al-Qasimi made a significant impact in the art world by establishing the Sharjah Art Foundation in 2009, where she currently holds the position of president and director. Her expertise in curating international biennials is evident through her work at the second Lahore Biennale in 2020 and the UAE Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015.

Having co-curated the sixth edition of the Sharjah Biennial in 2003, Al-Qasimi has continued to steer the event as its director ever since.

As the president of the International Biennial Association since 2017 and president of the Africa Institute, Al-Qasimi’s influence extends to various art institutions. She has previously served on the board of MoMA PS1 in New York and the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, showcasing her commitment to the global art scene.

Not stopping there, Al-Qasimi is also set to take on the role of artistic director for the sixth Aichi Triennale, slated to be held in Japan in 2025, further solidifying her position as a prominent figure in the art world.
