London’s groundbreaking Muslim film festival debuts now!

Exploring Muslim Experiences Through Film: The Inaugural Muslim International Film Festival in London

In a mission to showcase narratives from international Muslim filmmakers and celebrate Muslim culture and faith, the Muslim International Film Festival is set to kick off on May 30 in London’s Leicester Square.

Reclaiming Identity and Celebrating Cinematic Brilliance

Director of MIFF, Sajid Varda, shared his vision for the festival, stating, “The idea behind the festival is about reclaiming our identity and celebrating it. For the longest time, being Muslim has felt like something we can’t be proud of.”

He emphasized the importance of showcasing the cinematic brilliance of the creative Muslim community and its contributions to cinema, aiming to give audiences a glimpse into their lives and experiences.

A Diverse Range of Films and Collaborations

The festival will feature the London premiere of “Hounds” by Moroccan director Kamal Lazraq, along with critically acclaimed films from various countries including the UK, France, Turkiye, Tunisia, Jordan, Iran, and Sudan.

In collaboration with the British Film Commission, Netflix, and the BBC, the event will also include Q&A sessions, panels, and networking events to engage with a wider audience.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

Organizers have made the festival accessible to all, aligning the content with their faith and ethos by avoiding gratuitous violence, nudity, and overtly sexual themes.

Varda highlighted the efforts to keep ticket costs low, provide free tickets to various organizations, and offer discounts to students and those facing financial hardship, ensuring that the festival is inclusive of people from all backgrounds and beliefs.
