Riyadh Hosts 80th IATA Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit

Geopolitical and economic changes, safety, and emissions take center stage at the 80th IATA Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit in Dubai, starting on June 2.

Leaders from the global airline industry are gathered for the World Air Transport Summit, focusing on topics like artificial intelligence, innovation, and an annual report on the air transport industry.

Hosted by Emirates, the event in Dubai expects over 1,500 participants, including IATA’s member airlines, strategic partners, associations, manufacturers, suppliers, and media representatives.

Director General Willie Walsh highlighted Dubai’s connectivity and its role as a hub for the airline industry. He emphasized the city’s visionary leadership and policies that support aviation as an economic driver.

Aviation contributed significantly to Dubai’s economy last year, with 27 percent of its GDP and $37 billion in gross value added.

President of Emirates, Tim Clark, expressed excitement for the developments in Dubai and invited delegates to experience the city’s hospitality.

The World Air Transport Summit will address critical aviation issues, focusing on achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Sustainable aviation fuel and carbon removal will be key topics of discussion.

IATA will also assess progress on safety, financial sustainability, and other industry challenges to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable air travel.

The global aviation watchdog announced a significant decrease in blocked airline funds, urging governments to remove barriers to repatriation.

Director General Walsh emphasized the importance of airlines accessing their revenues to maintain critical connectivity, especially given the industry’s thin margins.

The reduction in blocked funds, totaling $1.8 billion, was driven by clearance in Nigeria and Egypt, despite challenges from currency devaluation.
