Exclusive Saudi Art Collection Set to Command London Auction Scene

Saddek Wasil: A Bronze Gem from Makkah

London’s Sloane Street Auctions is gearing up for its Summer Fine Art auction on June 12, featuring works from the esteemed collection of the late Dr. Mohammed Said Farsi. Farsi, the former mayor of Jeddah, was known for transforming the city into an “open-air museum” and was a prominent art collector. Among the standout pieces up for auction is a bronze sculpture by Makkah-born artist Saddek Wasil, expected to fetch up to £1,000 ($1,280).

David Hockney: A Dive into the Swimming Pool Series

Dr. Farsi’s collection also includes a lithograph from David Hockney’s iconic “Swimming Pool” series. Hockney, a leading figure in the pop-art movement, found inspiration in the pools of Los Angeles, viewing them as symbols of the American Dream. Farsi’s keen eye for exceptional art is evident in his selection of this piece by the renowned English painter and photographer.

Seif Wanly: A Glimpse into Dark Self

The auction will also feature works by Egyptian modern art pioneers, including the Wanly brothers. Seif Wanly’s self-portrait from 1970 reflects a shift towards darker tones following his brother Adham’s passing. The Wanly brothers, known for their significant contributions to Arab art, are represented in Farsi’s collection with 48 works, showcasing their artistic legacy.

Abdul Hazi El-Gazzar: Capturing Ordinary Nobility

Despite his premature death, El-Gazzar’s impact on Egyptian modern art is undeniable. His portrait of an Italian physician exemplifies his ability to infuse working-class subjects with a sense of nobility through his bold use of line and color. Farsi’s collection pays homage to El-Gazzar’s artistic vision and contribution to the artistic landscape.

‘Kiswah Panel’: A Sacred Treasure

One of the prized possessions in Farsi’s collection is a silver and gilt appliqué panel of the Kiswah, likely gifted by King Fahd. The Kiswah covers the sacred Kaaba in Makkah’s Great Mosque, symbolizing the rich cultural heritage and spiritual significance of the region.

Mohamed Nagy: A Glimpse of Europe in Egypt

Egyptian painter Mohamed Nagy, a pioneer of modern art in the region, showcases his European influences in his artwork. Studying under Claude Monet in Florence, Nagy’s “A Rural Landscape in France” reflects his admiration for the European Masters. His return to Egypt and role as the director of Alexandria’s Museum of Modern Art underscore his significant contributions to the art world.
