Preserving the Rich Culture and History of Hajj at King Abdulaziz Public Library

As the Hajj pilgrimage approaches, the King Abdulaziz Public Library in Riyadh is hard at work preserving manuscripts and photographs that showcase the deep-rooted culture and history of this sacred journey.

The library, a historical treasure trove of knowledge, houses rare artifacts that highlight the profound significance of the Two Holy Mosques in Islam.

With pilgrims worldwide gearing up for this spiritual expedition, the library stands as a guiding light of enlightenment, providing educational resources for those eager to delve deeper into the subject.

Rare Holdings at the Library

The library boasts over 6,000 items, including rare manuscripts, books, coins, miniatures, and pictures that are part of its database assets.

Among the prized possessions related to the Hajj ritual are manuscripts like “The Golden Poem on the Hajj Rites” by Mohammad Al-Halabi and “Sawaanih Al-Hijaz” by Bahaa Al-Din Al-Harithi Al-Dhahani from 1622.

Books and Photographs on Display

The library has published various books on Hajj and the Two Holy Mosques, including “A Japanese in Makkah” translated by Dr. Samir Ibrahim and Sarah Takahashi.

Other notable works include “Pilgrimage to Mecca” by Zainab Cobbold and “Viewing the Two Holy Mosques and the Aspects of Hajj through the Lens of Hajj” by Ahmed Mirza, the first Indian professional photographer to capture Hajj in 1907.

Preservation Efforts and Restoration Centre

The library’s Restoration Centre, launched in June 2022, focuses on sterilizing, restoring, treating, sewing, binding, and preserving rare and valuable cultural artifacts.

Their meticulous efforts extend to creating optimal conditions for the long-term safety and accessibility of these items, including documents, manuscripts, books, Qur’ans, photographs, maps, coins, and more.
