Exclusive Interview: Pixar’s Kelsey Mann Dishes on ‘Inside Out 2’ – Get Ready for an Epic Sequel!

Inside Out 2: A Dive into Teenage Emotions

Nine years after the groundbreaking release of Pixar’s “Inside Out,” the highly anticipated sequel is ready to hit cinemas with a bang.

“Inside Out 2” is set to premiere on June 13, featuring filmmaker Kelsey Mann’s introduction of new emotions as protagonist Riley navigates her tumultuous teen years.

The film kicks off with Riley entering adolescence just as the headquarters inside her mind undergoes a sudden demolition to make way for unexpected new emotions. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust find themselves grappling with the arrival of Anxiety, accompanied by Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment.

Mann explained, “I focused on Anxiety as a major character, a feeling that becomes more prevalent during the teenage years. I delved into research on adolescent brain development, leading to the concept of a wrecking ball tearing down Headquarters. The chaos mirrors the teenage experience.”

Exploring Real and Mind Worlds

Similar to its predecessor, “Inside Out 2” showcases two settings: the real world, where Riley interacts with her surroundings, and the mind world, where her Emotions assist in navigating the challenges of adolescence.

While the original film focused on memories, the sequel introduces the concept of a belief system.

Mann shared, “We wanted to introduce new ideas and explore new territories in the sequel. As Riley matures into a teenager, she begins to form her own beliefs. We were intrigued by the idea of visualizing beliefs and delving into the belief system, presenting a fresh perspective on teenage growth.”
