Uncover the Secrets of Abu Arish Castle: A Must-Visit for History Buffs!

Historic Castles of Jazan Province: A Rich Cultural Legacy

In the enchanting province of Jazan lies a treasure trove of historic castles that stand as a testament to a rich cultural heritage spanning centuries. These magnificent structures serve as a window into the society’s identity, values, and traditions, captured in the intricate details of their architecture.

The historic castle in Abu Arish, situated 33 kilometers from the bustling city of Jazan, is a prime example of this architectural marvel. Dating back hundreds of years, it is a significant tourist attraction for those who appreciate history and ancient architecture.

The castle, with some parts still standing tall, was constructed using burnt-clay bricks. (SPA)

This square-shaped castle, with a side length of 40 meters, is adorned with circular towers at each corner for support. The upper part of its outer wall features observation openings, offering a glimpse into its strategic design.

Crafted by skilled workers using local materials, the castle’s walls, towers, and arches were built with burnt-clay bricks, a common practice in ancient cities of the region. The columns in the circular towers were reinforced with rocks, reflecting a style prevalent in coastal castles along the Red Sea.

To top it off, the castle’s roofs were fashioned from stems of Doum Palm trees, abundant in the surrounding area, particularly in the lush Jazan Valley to the south.

While decoration patterns are sparse in this castle, its architectural features and design elements echo those found in palaces and residential buildings, showcasing a blend of functionality and elegance.
