Saudi Arabia to Strengthen Air Capabilities with Four Additional Airbus A330 MRTTs

Saudi Arabia is gearing up to enhance its air capabilities with the acquisition of four additional Airbus A330 MRTTs, a move aimed at boosting the Royal Saudi Air Force’s critical refueling and transport operations. The first batch of Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft is set to undergo modification in early 2026 to align with its intended role, with all four expected to be fully operational by 2027, according to a press release from the company.

The decision to procure these aircraft aligns with Saudi Arabia’s overarching goal of fortifying its defense sector, with a strong emphasis on localization as a top priority. The Kingdom aims to localize 50 percent of its defense spending by 2030, showcasing a commitment to boosting domestic capabilities.

Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector is experiencing significant growth, supported by substantial investments under the Vision 2030 plan. These investments, amounting to billions of dollars, are geared towards diversifying the economy away from fossil fuels and fostering growth in the private sector.

Global Leadership in A330 MRTT Operations

The latest contract solidifies Saudi Arabia’s position as one of the largest A330 MRTT operators globally, with the Royal Saudi Air Force set to operate these advanced aircraft. The deal includes a comprehensive logistics support package covering spare parts, training services, and service support for the new aircraft.

Technology Transfer and Industrial Development

Airbus has entered into an industrial participation agreement with the General Authority for Military Industries, supporting Vision 2030’s objectives of economic diversification through regional industrial development. This agreement includes technology transfer and knowledge sharing of the RSAF A330 MRTT to local firms, with SAAMS, a joint venture between Saudi Arabian Military Industries and Airbus, spearheading local industrialization efforts.

Strategic Partnerships for Military Readiness

In a strategic move to enhance military readiness and combat efficiency, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense signed multiple contracts and memorandums of understanding with both local and global companies during the World Defense Show in Riyadh. These partnerships are aimed at strengthening the Kingdom’s armed forces and bolstering their capabilities for future challenges.
