Saudi Arabia and the US Sign Framework Agreement for Cooperation in Space Exploration

In a groundbreaking move, Saudi Arabia and the United States have signed a framework agreement to enhance collaboration in civilian space exploration and research. According to Saudi Press Agency, the agreement was signed on Monday with NASA Administrator Bill Nelson representing the US and CEO of the Saudi Space Agency Mohammed bin Saud Al-Tamimi representing the Kingdom.

Titled β€œFramework Agreement Between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Cooperation in Aeronautics and the Exploration and Use of Airspace and Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes,” the agreement aims to establish a legal framework that will facilitate and strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

Abdullah Al-Swaha, chairman of the Saudi Space Agency, hailed the agreement as a β€œturning point in the Kingdom’s journey toward building a strong and prosperous space sector.” He emphasized that it underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to advancement and innovation in the realm of space travel.

Furthermore, the agreement recognizes the significance of the Artemis Accords, which both the US and Saudi Arabia have signed. These accords, signed in October 2020 and July 2022 respectively, demonstrate the commitment of both countries to transparent, safe, and responsible exploration of space, as stated by a State Department release.
