Record 60 Million Tourists Flock to Saudi Arabia, Spending Billions

ABHA: Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb revealed that a staggering 60 million tourists visited Saudi Arabia in the first half of 2024, splurging a total of SR143 billion ($38.1 billion).

During a press conference on Wednesday, the minister emphasized the remarkable progress made by the Kingdom and its tourism industry, leading to this outstanding accomplishment.

“Our country is graced with a plethora of tourist spots and a variety of climates, including the pleasant summer weather in the Aseer region and cooler temperatures compared to many cities worldwide,” he remarked.

Al-Khateeb pointed out that visitors could indulge in a myriad of attractions, from historic villages to farms brimming with local goods, and savor delectable cuisine steeped in history.

The third Aseer Season, running until Sept. 1, is poised to leave a lasting impression on the region, offering visitors rich cultural experiences at renowned sites.

Revered as the cultural heart of Saudi Arabia, Aseer boasts attractions like Rijal Alma and Shada Palace Museum in Abha. A highlight is Soudah Peaks, a sustainable luxury mountain retreat standing at 3,015 meters above sea level — the highest point in the Kingdom.

Al-Khateeb highlighted the impact of Vision 2030 on the tourism sector, citing the launch of the National Tourism Strategy in 2019 and the introduction of a tourist visa. He also mentioned the partnership between the Ministry of Tourism, King Khalid University, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University for the Bachelor of International Hospitality Management program.

“Our aim is to enhance tourism skills, establish international specialized technical colleges, and forge strategic partnerships in the tourism and hospitality sector,” he stated.

Al-Khateeb announced the allocation of 10,000 training opportunities within and outside the Kingdom for individuals working in the Aseer region’s tourism industry.

The National Tourism Strategy sets a target of attracting over 150 million local and international tourists by 2030, surpassing the 109 million mark in 2023.

Al-Khateeb emphasized the crucial role played by the Tourism Development Fund in providing funding, allocating SR7.4 billion for over 100 tourism projects across the Kingdom valued at more than SR35 billion.
