Saudi farmer transforms worm waste into profitable gold!

Saudi Farmer Turns Garden Nuisance into Gold with Vermicomposting Operation

In the heart of Al-Dhafir village in Baha, Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Al-Shaer has revolutionized farming practices by harnessing the power of earthworms to produce high-quality organic fertilizer.

Al-Shaer’s journey began a year ago with a modest setup of 2,000 worms in a single tank, but has since grown into a thriving vermicomposting operation that has yielded over 300 kg of nutrient-rich compost and a tenfold increase in worm population.

Through meticulous research and field trials, Al-Shaer has honed his techniques to optimize worm behavior, breeding, and feeding practices. His four-tank operation now fertilizes approximately 250 trees on his farm, resulting in accelerated plant growth, improved fruit production, and enhanced soil quality.

FAST FACT

Mohammed Al-Shaer’s venture began approximately a year ago with a simple setup: a single 5-meter-long, 60 cm-high tank housing roughly 2,000 worms.

Al-Shaer highlights the natural benefits of vermicomposting, emphasizing how it optimizes nutrient cycling, enhances soil quality, and promotes sustainable agricultural practices. His vision is to upscale the project into a full-fledged operation that produces large quantities of worm compost.

Furthermore, Al-Shaer aims to raise awareness about eco-friendly farming practices through agricultural festivals in Saudi Arabia, advocating for the use of organic fertilizers over harmful chemical alternatives. Local officials, including Fahd Al-Zahrani of the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture in Baha, have shown support for Al-Shaer’s initiative.

Dr. Lubna Saad, an expert in applied nutrition at Al-Baha University, underscores the scientific benefits of vermicomposting, highlighting its ability to enhance soil water retention and nutrient absorption. Saad describes vermicompost as a potent blend of worm castings and organic matter that boosts soil fertility.

At the recent Khayrat Al-Baha Festival, farmers commended Al-Shaer’s efforts, noting significant improvements in crop quality after incorporating organic fertilizer into their practices. With Al-Shaer leading the way, the future of sustainable agriculture in Saudi Arabia looks bright.
