Jeddah Historic District Celebrates 10th Anniversary on UNESCO World Heritage List
In a milestone celebration, the Jeddah Historic District Program marked the 10th anniversary of the district’s prestigious inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Back in 2014, the district earned its spot on the list for its exceptional universal value, solidifying its place as a cultural gem worth preserving.
Under the program’s watchful eye, the district’s cultural and urban heritage underwent a remarkable transformation, turning it into a sought-after global destination in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
Historic Jeddah, stretching over 2.5 sq. km along the Red Sea coast, has a rich history as a pivotal port for pilgrims bound for Makkah and a bustling trade hub connecting Asia and Africa since ancient times. Its legacy of cultural and economic exchange spans centuries.
Meeting UNESCO’s stringent criteria for World Heritage status, the Historic Jeddah district stands out for its historical significance as a meeting point of human values, its architectural excellence, and its association with events and traditions of universal importance.
Despite facing numerous challenges, like the urgent need to preserve deteriorating structures and enhance infrastructure while safeguarding the area’s unique heritage, the program has successfully executed various projects as part of its revitalization plan. These initiatives have not only enhanced the district’s appeal to visitors but also cemented its reputation as a top tourist destination.
The Jeddah Historic District Program has laid out four key pillars for its restoration efforts: preserving intangible cultural heritage, conducting archaeological excavations (including the wall and historic gates), revitalizing the urban fabric (markets, squares, and streets), and conserving historic buildings (houses, mosques, and endowments).
Furthermore, the program has established strict guidelines for safeguarding the area’s heritage, emphasizing the use of traditional materials and the maintenance of original building heights to uphold its historical integrity.
