Saudi Arabia’s Al-Faw Archaeological Site Joins UNESCO World Heritage List
In a monumental achievement, Saudi Arabia’s Al-Faw archaeological site, located southwest of Riyadh, has been officially recognized and registered on UNESCO’s prestigious World Heritage List. This marks the eighth location in the Kingdom to receive this esteemed designation.
Nestled in Wadi Ad-Dawasir, at the crossroads of the Empty Quarter desert and the Tuwaiq mountain range, Al-Faw boasts nearly 12,000 archaeological remnants that trace back over 6,000 years of human history. UNESCO highlights the site’s significance as a crucial point along the ancient trade routes of the Arabian Peninsula, deserted abruptly around the fifth century.
Unearthing a treasure trove of archaeological wonders, the site reveals artifacts spanning from prehistoric eras to the late pre-Islamic period, showcasing evidence of three distinct populations that once inhabited the area. Notable features include paleolithic and neolithic tools, unique structures, rock carvings, and remnants of the ancient city of Qaryat Al-Faw.
Renowned for their artistic talents in engraving, painting, and writing, the inhabitants of Al-Faw left behind residential quarters and trade routes that played a pivotal role in facilitating commerce. Culture Minister Prince Badr bin Farhan, also the governor of the Royal Commission for AlUla, expressed pride in achieving a Saudi Vision 2030 milestone with the site’s UNESCO recognition.
Emphasizing the Kingdom’s rich historical legacy and commitment to preserving global heritage, Prince Badr underscored the importance of heritage conservation and education. He affirmed Saudi Arabia’s dedication to enhancing national heritage assets, raising awareness, and ensuring their sustainability for future generations.
Joining the ranks of other UNESCO-listed Saudi sites like Al-Hijr, At-Turaif in Diriyah, and the Hima Cultural Area, Al-Faw’s inclusion on the World Heritage List cements its status as a cultural gem that reflects the Kingdom’s enduring legacy and vision for the future.
