The Majestic Juniper Tree: Guardian of Saudi Arabia’s Ecosystem
In the enchanting land of Taif, the juniper tree reigns supreme as the “Lady of Trees”, symbolizing the lush forests and towering mountains of Saudi Arabia. These ancient trees have withstood the test of time, providing vital habitats for wildlife across the provinces of Taif, Al-Baha, and Asir.
Nurturing the Guardians: Protecting the Juniper Trees
Under the vigilant care of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification, the venerable junipers are nurtured to ensure their longevity and protect natural resources. With the influx of tourists to Al-Hada and Al-Shafa villages in the Makkah region, preventing harmful practices and raising awareness is a top priority.
Preserving the Juniper Legacy: A Race Against Degradation
Dr. Ahmed Al-Ghamdi, director general of research and innovation at the center, highlighted the threats faced by the juniper tree due to human activities and climatic factors. The degradation of juniper environments in the Kingdom’s southwestern highlands has led to dieback in these majestic trees, visible in areas with lifeless vegetation.
“Despite its youth, the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification is actively engaged in rehabilitation efforts,” Al-Ghamdi stated. The center aims to combat degradation, expand forest coverage with juniper trees, and contribute to the Saudi Green Initiative’s ambitious goal of planting 10 billion trees in the Kingdom.
