Saudi Arabia Reaches Self-Sufficiency in Fig Production

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) proudly announced that Saudi Arabia has achieved self-sufficiency in fig production, with an impressive annual output exceeding 28,000 metric tons. This feat has been accomplished on 1,421 hectares of land spread across various regions of the kingdom.

Regional Breakdown

Jazan and Riyadh regions stand out as the top producers, with annual production figures of 9,906 metric tons and 8,010 metric tons, respectively. Asir follows closely behind with 3,970 MT, while Makkah, Hail, Al-Jouf, Al-Baha, Qassim, Najran, Tabuk, Madinah, and the Northern Borders also contribute significantly to the overall production.

Seasonal Delights

The fig production season spans from February to November each year, showcasing popular varieties like Madani, Turkish, Waziri, Kadota, and White King alongside local ones. These figs are not just delicious but also packed with health benefits, aiding in preventing diseases like Alzheimer’s, regulating blood pressure, strengthening bones, and improving hair and skin health.

Driving Agricultural Development

MEWA is actively involved in developing fig production through the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program. By tapping into available opportunities and resources and harnessing the natural agricultural potential of different regions, the ministry aims to boost production, processing, and marketing efforts.

Farmers’ Success Stories

Local farmer Bassam Al-Haboub has emerged as a success story in the fig production initiative. Over the past two years, he has planted 1,200 fig trees and focused on cultivating a variety known for its high yield, firmness, and transportability. Leveraging his agriculture expertise, Al-Haboub markets his produce locally and credits MEWA for organizing festivals that provide a platform for farmers to showcase their products and access support services.
