In a daring operation, border guards in Jazan successfully thwarted attempts to smuggle more than 800 kilograms of qat into the Kingdom, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency.
Interception in Al-Aridah and Ad-Dair Governorates
Security patrols in Al-Aridah governorate managed to intercept 500 kg of qat, while in Ad-Dair governorate, 90 kg were seized. The vigilance of the guards paid off when a citizen was apprehended in Ad-Dair for trying to smuggle 226 kg of qat concealed in the vehicle he was driving.
Qat Smuggling Hotspots
Located on the border between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, Al-Aridah and Ad-Dair have become hotspots for qat smuggling due to Yemen’s reputation as a major producer and consumer of the stimulant. Qat leaves are commonly chewed for their mild stimulant effects, which are far less potent compared to substances like cocaine or methamphetamine.
