In a bold move towards decarbonization, Saudi Arabia has teamed up with Toyota Motor Corp. to advance cleaner energy solutions in the transportation sector and beyond. King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and Abdul Latif Jameel Motors are the local entities joining forces with the Japanese automotive giant.

Cutting-Edge Laboratory Established at KAUST

KAUST has acquired proton electrolyte membrane fuel cell modules from Toyota, setting up a state-of-the-art laboratory within its Clean Energy and Research Platform. This facility is set to play a pivotal role in the Kingdom’s hydrogen innovation efforts, specifically in adapting fuel cells to suit the region’s environmental conditions.

Saudi Arabia’s Ambitious Hydrogen Goals

Saudi Arabia aims to produce around 2.9 million tons of hydrogen by 2030, with a focus on competitive domestic and export costs. This partnership aligns with the Kingdom’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving net zero emissions by 2060.

Professor Mani Sarathy from KAUST expressed excitement about collaborating with Toyota and Abdul Latif Jameel Motors to promote hydrogen fuel cell technology in Saudi Arabia. The Clean Energy Research Platform team is dedicated to optimizing fuel cells for the region’s unique conditions, ensuring efficiency and reliability.
