From Date Farmer to Artist: The Inspiring Journey of Mohammad Alfaraj
Born in the desert oasis of Al-Ahsa in Saudi Arabia, Mohammad Alfaraj comes from a long line of date farmers. But now, at 31 years old, he is making a name for himself as an artist and poet of visuals, showcasing his work at the prestigious Art Basel Paris international art fair.
A Unique Path to Art
Alfaraj’s journey to becoming an artist was not a traditional one. Despite studying Applied Mechanical Engineering, his passion for filmmaking and photography eventually led him to pursue a career in the arts. His background in agriculture has also heavily influenced his work, inspiring him to create art from the resources around him.
The Date Fruit of Knowledge
One of Alfaraj’s standout installations at Art Basel Paris is “The Date Fruit of Knowledge,” a stop-motion film that tells the story of a nightingale in search of ultimate wisdom. Through this piece, Alfaraj explores the concept of patience and the journey of life, drawing inspiration from religious parables and folklore.
Art from Waste
Alfaraj’s art is not only visually striking but also sustainable. He uses waste palm materials to create his illustrations and sculptures, embodying the idea of finding beauty in discarded objects. His commitment to environmental consciousness extends to his personal life, as he strives to keep his carbon footprint low, even while traveling for exhibitions.
An Anti-SS Artist
Alfaraj describes himself as an “anti-SS” artist, emphasizing that style and scale should not dictate the value of art. Instead, he believes that the heart and soul behind the work should be the driving force. His installations, such as “From What Bone Will We Grow Back On the First Day of Eternity?” from the “Last Words of a Tree” series, reflect his deep sense of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
