Saudi Arabia Revolutionizing Desalination Efficiency and Cost

Saudi Arabia has transformed its desalination efficiency by 80 percent and slashed costs by 50 percent in recent years, according to a top official from the Kingdom.

Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Mansour bin Hilal Al-Mushaiti described the achievements as a groundbreaking milestone at the 2025 Budget Forum hosted by the Ministry of Finance in Riyadh.

Monumental Progress in Water Production

The daily desalinated water production has surged to 6 million cubic meters, contributing to a total capacity of 11.3 million cubic meters daily, showcasing the Kingdom’s commitment to water security and sustainability.

Al-Mushaiti highlighted the extensive water infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, spanning over 14,000 km to deliver water to communities across the Kingdom.

Boost in Storage Capacity and Government Support

Strategic water storage capacity has doubled, rising from 13 million cubic meters in 2016 to over 25 million cubic meters today, ensuring resilience in times of crisis.

The achievements were attributed to strong government support and private-sector collaboration, with 30 percent of water projects being funded by foreign investments.

Technological Advancements and Water Conservation

Technological advancements have played a critical role in Saudi Arabia’s water conservation efforts, saving over 9 billion cubic meters of groundwater annually through innovation and sustainable practices.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the water sector installed 2 million electronic meters for efficient billing and consumption monitoring, promoting responsible consumption.

Environmental Initiatives and Green Era

The Saudi Green Initiative has led to the planting of over 95 million trees using renewable water and supplementary irrigation, marking the start of a green era for the Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia’s leadership in addressing global water challenges was highlighted, with the establishment of the Global Water Organization by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2023.

Optimism for the Future

As Saudi Arabia continues its ambitious plans for water security, agriculture, and environmental sustainability, Al-Mushaiti concluded with optimism, stating, “The journey so far has been remarkable, but the best is yet to come.”
