Historic Al-Faqir Well in Madinah Reopens After Development Work
After undergoing extensive development work, the Al-Faqir Well in Madinah, also known as the Salman Al-Farsi Well, has reopened its doors to visitors. Dating back over 14 centuries, this historic landmark has strong ties to Prophet Muhammad’s era, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency.
Situated in the Alya area of Madinah, the well is surrounded by lush orchards and was once operated using pulleys for water extraction. Now, under the careful supervision of the Madinah Region Development Authority and other relevant bodies, it has been equipped with modern facilities including a pool.
Historical researcher Fouad Al-Maghamisi highlighted the connection between the Al-Faqir Well and the story of Salman Al-Farsi, who was originally a slave working in the orchard. Prophet Muhammad freed him by paying the orchard owner, leading to the site being named after him. Despite this, it is commonly known as the Al-Faqir Well.
The recent development work involved installing an iron fence around the well and its conduits, reinforcing water paths, the bridge, and the main gate with local stone from Madinah. The restoration efforts aimed to maintain the original construction’s authenticity.
In addition to the renovations, palm trees have been planted in the area, the internal courtyard has been enhanced, and stone benches have been added for visitors’ comfort. An informative plaque at the entrance now provides insights into the location’s history.
