Saudi Seaports Break Records with Increase in Container Handling

Seaports in Saudi Arabia have seen a significant surge in container handling, with a 16.88 percent increase in February compared to the same period last year, according to official data released by the Saudi Ports Authority, known as Mawani.

In February 2024, the ports in the Kingdom received a total of 226,672 standard containers, up from 193,937 in February 2023. Additionally, there was a 1.44 percent uptick in the volume of handled tonnage, reaching 23.38 million tonnes compared to 23.04 million tonnes the previous year.

Mawani highlighted the efforts made to develop port infrastructure and enhance logistics services, resulting in these record-breaking numbers.

Breakdown of Cargo Volumes and Maritime Traffic

The general cargo volumes in Saudi ports reached 830,641 tonnes, with solid bulk cargo at 3.62 million tonnes and liquid bulk cargo at 12.58 million tonnes. The number of livestock discharged also saw a significant increase of 166.67 percent.

Despite the overall growth, the number of passengers and vehicles decreased in February 2024 compared to the previous year. However, maritime traffic increased by 1.57 percent, totaling 907 ships.

Port Performance and National Strategy Alignment

King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam achieved a new monthly handling record with 235,820 containers in February 2024. The performance aligns with the national strategy for transportation and logistics services, positioning the Kingdom as a global hub.

The UN Conference on Trade and Development reported an increase in Mawani’s points, affirming Saudi Arabia’s progress in the maritime sector. The Kingdom also climbed 17 ranks in the Logistics Performance Index to reach the 38th spot globally in 2023.
