Riyadh Boosts Innovation with New Intellectual Property Prosecution Body

In a move that experts say will revolutionize the Kingdom’s approach to intellectual property rights, Saudi Arabia has established a specialized investigative body for intellectual property litigation. This groundbreaking development is expected to stimulate innovative projects and attract foreign investment to the country.

Approval by the Public Prosecution Council

The Public Prosecution Council in Saudi Arabia gave the green light for the establishment of the Intellectual Property Prosecution in mid-February, marking a significant step towards enhancing the protection of intellectual property rights in the Kingdom.

Enforcing the National Intellectual Property Strategy

The Ministry of Justice announced the establishment of the body as part of the National Intellectual Property Strategy spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This strategic move aims to create a conducive environment for organizing and developing judicial services in the field of intellectual property.

Key Role in Vision 2030

Described as a crucial component in achieving the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, the Intellectual Property Prosecution will focus on investigating and prosecuting cases related to intellectual property rights violations, including trademarks, copyrights, patents, plant varieties, and industrial models.

Enhancing Judicial Protection

The Ministry highlighted that the specialized prosecutors at the Intellectual Property Prosecution have undergone rigorous training to ensure effective criminal protection of intellectual property rights. This commitment is expected to lead to significant growth in the sector.

Impacts on Innovation and Investment

Experts such as Abdullah Alakeel, chairman of the Saudi Scientific Research and Innovation Association, believe that the establishment of the Intellectual Property Prosecution will create an environment that attracts international technologies, innovators, and inventors. This move will provide a safe and secure space for individuals and companies to protect their intellectual property rights in the Kingdom.

Abdullah Al-Hamed, head of investment advisory at GIB Capital, anticipates that the new body will not only preserve rights but also enhance the financial and intellectual benefits for rights holders. This development signifies a paradigm shift in Saudi Arabia’s approach to intellectual property protection.
