UK Eurovision Contestant Calls for Ceasefire in Gaza
LONDON: In a powerful move, the UK’s Eurovision contestant, Olly Alexander of Years and Years, has joined forces with other acts from around Europe to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, as reported by Sky News.
The singer will be performing solo at the contest in May, using his platform to advocate for peace.
The joint statement, signed by artists like Ireland’s Bambie Thug, Finland’s Windows95Man, and more, demands an “immediate and lasting ceasefire” in Gaza.
The statement emphasizes the importance of solidarity with the oppressed and expresses a heartfelt wish for peace, a ceasefire, and the safe return of hostages in the region.
The signatories refuse to stay silent in the face of Gaza’s suffering, standing against all forms of hate including antisemitism and Islamophobia.
Pressure has been mounting on European broadcasters to boycott Israel’s participation in Eurovision, hosted this year in Sweden.
Israel’s contestant, Eden Golan, faced controversy for perceived references to Hamas attacks in her country’s entry, leading to lyric changes.
