Riyadh Hosts Meeting with UN Officials to Address Landmine Crisis in Yemen
In a recent gathering at the headquarters of Project Masam in Aden, the managing director of Saudi Arabia’s landmine clearance project, Ousama Al-Gosaibi, engaged in discussions with UN officials to tackle the pressing issue of landmines in Yemen.
During the meeting with UN Office for Project Services adviser Charles Frisby and mine action expert Javed Habibullah, Al-Gosaibi emphasized the areas heavily affected by mines and the severe impact on local communities.
Expressing concern over the lack of international support, Al-Gosaibi stressed the urgent need for funding to support clearance operations in Yemen.
He urged for collective efforts to pressure the Iran-backed Houthis to cease laying mines and adhere to international humanitarian laws by providing maps indicating the locations of these explosive devices.
Sharing the project’s achievements in Yemen, Al-Gosaibi highlighted the successful collaboration with the Yemen Executive Mine Action Center and the contribution of Yemeni citizens to the clearance efforts.
Chief technical adviser Vince Kabir elaborated on the operational strategies and techniques employed by project workers in Yemen, showcasing the removal of complex mines and the meticulous procedures for safe disposal.
Frisby commended the efficient and organized work of Project Masam teams in safeguarding Yemeni civilians, dismantling mines, and mitigating the hazards of warfare.
Recognizing the gravity of the crisis marked by mines and improvised explosive devices in Yemen, Frisby called for solidarity to eliminate these threats and restore normalcy in all Yemeni territories.
