Abu Dhabi Airports Soar with 22.4 Million Travelers in 2023

In a remarkable surge, Abu Dhabi’s airports welcomed approximately 22.4 million travelers in 2023, showing a staggering 40 percent increase from the previous year. This growth was predominantly driven by passengers from the vibrant Indian subcontinent, according to official data.

Record-Breaking Numbers

The Statistics Centre – Abu Dhabi reported that annual arrivals through the emirate’s airports in 2023 surpassed 11.1 million, while departures stood at 11.3 million, as highlighted by the Emirates News Agency, better known as WAM.

Aviation Sector Triumph

The surge in figures aligns with multiple air transport agreements facilitated by the country’s General Civil Aviation Authority and the various enhancements made throughout 2023. It showcases the aviation sector’s significant accomplishment in efficiently managing air traffic and ensuring seamless and secure arrivals and departures for all COP28 guests.

Flight Traffic Skyrockets

Abu Dhabi’s airports experienced substantial increases in aircraft traffic in 2023, with Zayed International Airport handling 141,225 flights, marking a notable 27.8 percent rise from 2022. Meanwhile, Al-Ain International Airport saw 8,409 flights, up from 7,598 in the previous year.

Top Origins and Destinations

The report revealed that the Indian subcontinent led the arrivals list through Abu Dhabi’s airports by country of origin, with approximately 3.2 million travelers by the end of 2023. Western Europe, Asia, Gulf Cooperation Council countries, and East Asia followed suit with significant numbers.

Cargo Traffic Statistics

In terms of cargo traffic, 319,993 tonnes of goods were imported last year, predominantly from Asia. Export figures stood at 238,644 tonnes, with Western Europe taking the lead. Al-Ain International Airport also played a crucial role in handling cargo traffic.

Future Projections

Looking ahead, a senior civil aviation executive projected that the UAE’s airports would cater to 135 million passengers in 2024, reflecting a 4 percent increase from the previous year. Positive indicators hint at growth in flights and destinations for national carriers, with anticipated expansion from countries like Canada, South Korea, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
