Arab Comedy Kings: Meet the Hilarious Habibis Dominating the US Scene

Empowering Arab Comedians: The Rise of Hilarious Habibis in the Stand-Up Scene

LOS ANGELES: In a groundbreaking move, Hilarious Habibis has emerged as one of the pioneering standup comedy platforms founded and led by Middle Eastern women in the US. With a mission to elevate Arab comedians in the cutthroat world of stand-up, this group is making waves in the industry.

Headed by the dynamic duo Lynn Maleh and Gena B. Jones, Hilarious Habibis is not just a comedy showcase, but a platform to foster a sense of community and provide opportunities for Arab talent to shine on stage.

Maleh, a writer and comedian, emphasized the importance of their platform in giving exposure to comedians who may not have had the chance to headline at top clubs like the Hollywood Improv. “We aim to level up their game and provide them with a space to showcase their talent,” she stated.

Since its inception in 2016, Hilarious Habibis has evolved from a close-knit group of friends performing at the Hollywood Improv to a well-respected stand-up showcase. The group has even graced prestigious festivals such as the New York Comedy Festival, SF SketchFest, and the Netflix Is A Joke comedy festival.

Jones highlighted the growing demand for Arab representation in comedy, stating, “Our show is incredibly relevant in today’s world. People are craving Arab comedy, and we are here to deliver.” She also noted the diverse audience that their shows attract, including non-Arabs and people of color who appreciate and enjoy their unique brand of humor.

Notable comedians such as Bassem Youseff, Maz Jobrani, and Salma Hindy have graced the stage at Hilarious Habibis. Hindy, who is set to join the voice cast of Ramy Youssef’s upcoming Amazon animated show, emphasized the importance of building a strong Arab community in the West. “It’s crucial for us to reclaim our stories and identities, unapologetically showcase our Arab heritage, and demand our rightful place in the entertainment industry,” she stated.
