Arab League Calls for Action Against Israel’s Illegal Settlements
In a bold move, the Arab League’s foreign ministers have united in urging the international community to enforce the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion, which declared Israel’s settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as illegal.
During the 162nd Ministerial Meeting of the Arab League Council in Cairo, the ministers made it clear that Israel must put an end to its illegal presence and all settlement activities, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency.
They are calling on the UN General Assembly and Security Council to take further action to put an end to Israel’s unlawful occupation of the region.
The ministers are also pushing for the ICJ to expedite its judgment on a case brought by South Africa against Israel, accusing them of violating the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
According to the ministers, Israel’s expulsion of the Palestinian people from their land is a serious violation of international humanitarian law, constituting a declaration of war and aggression against Arab nations. This, in turn, undermines peace efforts and fuels conflict in the region.
Furthermore, the ministers are calling for Israel to be suspended from participating in the UN General Assembly due to their failure to comply with the UN Charter’s principles, posing a threat to international peace and security.
In a final blow, they criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for refusing to withdraw from the Philadelphi corridor, hindering efforts for a ceasefire and the exchange of prisoners and hostages.
