Riyadh Welcomes New Shipping Service Connecting Jeddah to the Northern Red Sea

In a significant development for the Kingdom’s maritime sector, Saudi independent short-sea service provider Folk Maritime has launched a new shipping service connecting Jeddah to the northern Red Sea.

Enhancing Connectivity in the Region

The Saudi Ports Authority, also known as Mawani, has announced that the new service will link Jeddah Islamic Port, Yanbu Commercial Port, and NEOM Port in Saudi Arabia to Aqaba Port in Jordan and Ain Sokhna Port in Egypt. This offering, referred to as NRS, will operate through regular weekly trips with a capacity of up to 1,300 standard containers.

Supporting Market Growth and Trade

The introduction of this service aims to support the needs of the growing market and trade in the region while reinforcing the Kingdom’s position as a global logistics hub connecting three continents. This initiative aligns with the objectives of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistic Services and highlights the joint cooperation between Mawani and Folk Maritime.

Expanding Operational Capabilities

By collaborating with Folk Maritime, the Saudi Ports Authority aims to expand the company’s operational and logistical capabilities as a new operator in the regional market. Folk Maritime is the first Saudi shipping line specializing in both container and feeder ships, emphasizing the Kingdom’s commitment to enhancing its maritime infrastructure.

Strategic Advantage of Jeddah Islamic Port

The addition of new shipping services to Jeddah Islamic Port further strengthens its pivotal position due to its strategically advantageous location. As the first harbor on the Red Sea coast for transit maritime trade and the transshipment of containers and goods, Jeddah Islamic Port plays a crucial role in connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Investing in Integrated Logistics

In March, Mawani partnered with MEDLOG to establish an integrated logistics zone in Jeddah, with an investment value projected to reach up to SR175 million ($46.6 million). This project aims to provide job opportunities, train national staff in the logistics services sector, and enhance operational efficiency while promoting sustainability through the use of alternative energy sources.
