Saudi Arabia Boosts Fisheries Sector with New Financial Support Program

In a move to enhance the fisheries sector, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli, has launched a direct financial support program called Reef Saudi. This program aims to revolutionize the industry and create new opportunities for growth, according to a statement released by the ministry.

Reef Saudi: A Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program

Reef Saudi, also known as the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program, is designed to uplift the rural agricultural sector, improve the livelihood of small farmers and rural families, enhance productivity and efficiency, and boost food security. This initiative is in alignment with the goals of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, marking a significant step towards strengthening the local economy.

Supporting Fishermen for a Sustainable Future

To be eligible for financial support under the Reef Saudi program, fishermen must hold a valid fishing license in the Saudi artisan or Saudi sailor category, and should not be employed in the public or private sector. Additionally, fishermen must be at least 18 years old, reside within the Kingdom, and undertake fishing trips lasting a minimum of six hours.

During its presidency of a special UN committee dedicated to the fisheries sector, Saudi Arabia showcased its efforts to lead and unify global initiatives for industry development. The Kingdom’s permanent representative to the FAO, Mohammed Al-Ghamdi, highlighted Saudi Arabia’s commitment to promoting sustainability and growth in the fisheries sector during the 36th session of the committee held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome.
