Saudi Arabia’s Imports and Exports Surge Despite Regional Tensions

In a surprising turn of events, Saudi Arabia’s imports and exports have increased by 5 percent in the first quarter of 2024, defying the tension in the region, as confirmed by a senior official.

Growth in Container Handling at Saudi Ports

Back in November 2023, the Saudi Ports Authority, known as Mawani, reported a 5.31 percent increase in container handling across all seaports in October. A total of 741,905 twenty-foot equivalent units were processed, marking a significant rise from the previous year.

Advancements in Saudi Logistics Sector

During an interview at the Logistic Integration Forum 2024, Minister of Transport and Logistic Services Saleh Al-Jasser highlighted the collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors that have led to the growth in the logistics sector. He emphasized the significant advancements made since the launch of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi Arabia’s Ambitious Logistics Goals

Minister Al-Jasser discussed the ambitious objectives set by the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services, aiming to transform Saudi Arabia into a global logistics hub. He noted the Kingdom’s impressive progress, including a significant rise in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index ranking.

Progress in Air, Maritime, and Railway Sectors

The minister also highlighted the growth in global air connectivity, with the number of international destinations connected to the Kingdom increasing to 150. He mentioned substantial progress in the maritime, air, and railway sectors, with rapid developments underway.

Focus on Eastern Province and Free Logistic Zones

Minister Al-Jasser pointed out the significant growth in the Eastern Province, including a 35 percent increase at King Abdulaziz Port. He also mentioned efforts to establish free logistic zones in various regions, following successful models in key locations across Saudi Arabia.

Enhancing Land Connectivity with Gulf Countries

Discussing land connectivity with Gulf countries, Al-Jasser emphasized the importance of projects like the King Fahd Causeway and ongoing efforts to enhance road infrastructure. He also mentioned collaborations with Bahrain to explore future partnership opportunities.

Integrating Railway Networks Across the Country

As part of the national strategy, all ports in the Eastern Province are interconnected, with plans to connect ports in the western region and integrate railway networks nationwide. The focus remains on improving connectivity and enhancing logistics capabilities in Saudi Arabia.
