Boosting Wheat and Barley Productivity in Saudi Arabia: New Program Launched!

Saudi Arabia’s Wheat and Barley Production Set to Strengthen Through Plant Genetic Resources Program

In a bid to boost its wheat and barley production, Saudi Arabia is embarking on a new program that aims to inventory 903 plant genetic resources from fruit trees.

The process of Plant Genetic Resources (PGR) involves the collection and documentation of genetic material from plants that are valuable for both current and future generations.

This initiative is crucial for agro-biodiversity, encompassing crops, livestock, and related species, and serves as the foundation of food, agriculture, and nutritional security.

Implementation of the Program

The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture in Saudi Arabia has launched this program with a three-pronged approach. The first axis focuses on inventorying, purifying, and evaluating local plant varieties, while the second involves collaboration with international organizations. The third axis centers on the implementation of a regional breeding program.

Commitment to Sustainability

This strategic move aligns with the ministry’s vision to promote environmental and natural resource sustainability, ensure water security, enhance food protection, and elevate the quality of life in the Kingdom. By investing in plant genetic resources, Saudi Arabia is paving the way for a more robust agricultural industry and a secure food supply for its people.
