Breaking Barriers: The Rise of Rima Al-Harbi
ALULA: In a groundbreaking moment for Saudi Arabia, Rima Al-Harbi made history this week as the first Saudi woman to clinch victory at the AlUla Camel Cup. Speaking to Arab News, Al-Harbi expressed her pride in representing her country on home soil, calling it the ultimate triumph.
Last year, Al-Harbi stood out as the sole female competitor in a field dominated by male riders. This year, the competition introduced a women’s category, and Al-Harbi returned to claim the top spot.
Despite facing more experienced opponents, Al-Harbi’s unwavering determination propelled her to success. She reflected, “I didn’t feel like anyone challenged me. From start to finish, I maintained the lead.”
Raised in Madinah, Al-Harbi inherited a passion for camel racing from her father and grandfather. Her grandfather’s encouragement led her to start riding at the age of seven, and now she dedicates two hours daily to training with her camel, Auf.
While her sisters ride camels as a hobby, Al-Harbi is the only one pursuing professional competition. She has established a training club for local women interested in exploring the sport, aiming to foster a sense of community and inspire more Saudi women to join her journey.
Al-Harbi’s commitment to sharing her love for camel racing is evident in her selfless efforts to guide aspiring female riders. She emphasized, “It is just about introducing the sport to women who are interested. I offer them guidance and advice, and we walk through the sport.”
As the AlUla Camel Cup draws to a close, Al-Harbi basked in her victory by returning to support fellow riders. However, she humorously mentioned her plans to skip the final day in favor of some well-deserved rest.
Al-Harbi’s triumph not only marks a personal milestone but also symbolizes the growing presence of Saudi women in traditionally male-dominated sports. Her story serves as a beacon of empowerment and inspiration for aspiring athletes across the kingdom.
