Breaking News: Riyadh Restaurant Chain Under Investigation for Food Poisoning Outbreak

Riyadh Hit by Food Poisoning Outbreak Linked to Hamburgini Restaurant Chain

Riyadh was rocked by a wave of food poisoning cases caused by Clostridium botulinum on Thursday, with several individuals being hospitalized after consuming food from the local Hamburgini fast-food restaurant chain.

Ministry of Health Provides Update on Outbreak

Ministry of Health spokesperson Dr. Mohammed Al-Abd Al-Aly took to his X account on Saturday to provide an update on the situation. He revealed that six cases have fully recovered, two have been discharged, but 35 individuals remain hospitalized, with 28 in intensive care.

The Dangers of Clostridium Botulinum Contamination

Clostridium botulinum contamination in food can lead to botulism, a severe illness caused by the neurotoxin produced by the bacteria. If left untreated, botulism can result in paralysis and even death. This type of contamination is often associated with improperly processed canned goods, home-canned vegetables, and cured meats.

Response to the Outbreak

The outbreak was first reported on Thursday when Riyadh Municipality received complaints of food poisoning cases linked to the Hamburgini restaurant chain. Health oversight teams immediately launched an investigation and ordered the closure of all Hamburgini locations in Riyadh by 10 p.m. that same day.

Hamburgini CEO Addresses the Situation

On Friday, Hamburgini founder and CEO Nawaf Al-Fozan released a video statement on the restaurant’s Instagram page, confirming their involvement in the outbreak. Despite the municipality’s order to close, Al-Fozan stated that they proactively shut down all operations and suspended delivery services.

Al-Fozan emphasized Hamburgini’s commitment to global food hygiene and safety standards, expressing concern for those affected and pledging to work closely with authorities to address the situation.

Health Ministry’s Call for Official Information

The Health Ministry stressed the importance of relying on official sources for accurate information and guidance. They also commended the efforts of various authorities in containing the outbreak and providing treatment to those impacted.
