Breaking News: Saudi Project Removes 797 Deadly Houthi Mines in Yemen

Saudi Arabia’s Project Masam: Clearing Mines in Yemen

In a recent report, Saudi Arabia’s Project Masam revealed that 797 mines planted by the Houthi militia in Yemen were cleared between April 20 to 26. Overseen by the Kingdom’s aid agency KSrelief, the project’s special teams successfully destroyed various types of explosives, including unexploded ordnance, anti-tank mines, improvised explosive devices, and anti-personnel mines.

Protecting Civilians from Threats

The indiscriminate planting of explosives by the Houthis across Yemen posed a significant threat to civilians, including children, women, and the elderly. Project Masam plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the population by clearing these dangerous devices from the affected areas.

Clearing Mines Across Multiple Regions

Demining operations conducted by Project Masam took place in various regions of Yemen, including Marib, Aden, Jouf, Shabwa, Taiz, Hodeidah, Lahij, Sanaa, Al-Bayda, Al-Dhale, and Saada. Since its inception in 2018, a total of 438,413 mines have been cleared, making the environment safer for the local population.

Supporting Local Engineers and Injured Yemenis

Project Masam not only focuses on clearing mines but also provides training to local demining engineers and equips them with modern tools. Additionally, the initiative offers support to Yemenis who have been injured by these explosive devices, helping them recover and rebuild their lives.

Ensuring Safe Movement and Aid Delivery

With over 5 million people displaced due to the conflict in Yemen, the presence of landmines has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis. Masam teams work tirelessly to clear villages, roads, and schools, ensuring the safe movement of civilians and the uninterrupted delivery of vital humanitarian aid.

Continued Efforts and Future Plans

The contract for Project Masam has been extended until June 2023, with an allocated budget of $33.29 million. This demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting the people of Yemen and creating a safer environment for all.
