US Special Envoy for Yemen to Visit Saudi Arabia and Oman for Talks on Houthi Attacks
In a bid to address recent attacks by the Houthi militia on vessels in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways, disrupting international maritime traffic, the US State Department announced that the US special envoy for Yemen, Tim Lenderking, will be visiting Saudi Arabia and Oman this week.
Lenderking will engage in discussions with officials in Riyadh and Muscat about the urgent need for an immediate cessation of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. These attacks have been undermining progress on the Yemen peace process and hindering the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Yemen and other countries in need.
The Houthi militia’s campaign of drone and missile attacks on shipping in the Red Sea began in November, with the group stating their intention to pressure Israel to cease its actions in Gaza.
In response to these attacks, the US and UK have conducted airstrikes targeting Houthi sites in Yemen to safeguard freedom of navigation and protect global trade.
The US State Department affirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting a lasting peace in Yemen and addressing the complex humanitarian and economic crises affecting the Yemeni people.
Washington advocates for a return to UN-led peace efforts once the Houthi militia ceases their indiscriminate attacks.
During his visit, Lenderking will collaborate with regional officials to explore ways to deescalate the crisis and refocus efforts on achieving a sustainable peace for the Yemeni people.
