Dalya Moumina on Why Jeddah Will Always Be Home – Exclusive Interview!

Meet Dalya Moumina: The Emerging Artist Blending Arab and Asian Influences in Utopian Landscapes

Dalya Moumina is not your average artist. Born in Washington DC in 1996 to a Saudi-Palestinian father and a Filipina mother, she is a rising star in the New York art scene, captivating audiences with her imaginative landscape paintings that pay homage to her diverse heritage.

From Jeddah to New York: A Journey Through Art

Growing up in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Moumina’s childhood was filled with adventure. She fondly recalls her time spent by the Red Sea, riding horses, and exploring the desert landscapes. These experiences have deeply influenced her work, with the vibrant blues of the Red Sea and the contrasting terrains of Saudi Arabia making their way into her bold utopian landscapes.

Philippines to New York: A Fusion of Cultures in Art

Moumina’s connection to her Filipino roots is also evident in her work, as she draws inspiration from the tribal communities and stunning landscapes of the Philippines. The rich colors and primitive shapes found in Filipino ceremonies have found their way into her art, creating a unique fusion of cultures and influences.

Artistic Inspiration and Evolution

While art may not run in her family, Moumina’s passion for painting has been a constant in her life. From selling her first artwork at a school exhibition to studying the works of American master Georgia O’Keeffe, she has always been drawn to the world of art. Her bold colors, sharp contrasts, and three-dimensional execution reflect her unique style and vision.

The Pandemic Pause and Creative Resurgence

As the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Moumina found solace in painting once again. Missing the landscapes and tranquility of her childhood, she turned to her art to express her emotions and memories. Working with oil paint, she creates mesmerizing landscapes that transport viewers to otherworldly realms, inviting them to explore and feel something new.

Artistic Ambitions and Challenges

Now based in New York, Moumina is navigating the competitive art scene while staying true to her roots. Represented by GR Gallery, she recently showcased her nature pieces in a group show titled “Transfiguration.” She acknowledges the challenges of being a female artist in a male-dominated field but remains determined to succeed through networking and connecting with fellow artists.

A Bright Future Ahead

As she continues to evolve as an artist, Moumina hopes to inspire others through her work, creating pieces that ignite emotions and spark conversations. With a unique blend of Arab and Asian influences, she is carving her path in the art world and proving that art knows no boundaries.
