Saudi Arabia’s Dar Tantora The House Hotel in AlUla Old Town Makes Time Magazine’s List of World’s Greatest Places

Time magazine has unveiled its prestigious annual list of the “world’s greatest places,” and Saudi Arabia has made the cut with the inclusion of Dar Tantora The House Hotel in AlUla Old Town historical village.

An Architectural Marvel by Egyptian Designer Shahira Fahmy

Crafted by the talented Egyptian architect Shahira Fahmy, this unique hotel stands out as the “first and only lodging option built directly out of the over 800-year-old mudbrick houses that were once a pivotal stop along the incense trading route through the Arabian Peninsula,” as reported by Time.

A Blend of Heritage and Luxury

Fahmy and her team meticulously restored 30 buildings in the area, preserving the rich history and architectural heritage of the region. The hotel itself is illuminated by candlelight, boasting minimal electricity usage.

Bringing Ancient Techniques to Life

In a previous interview with Arab News, Fahmy revealed that the design of the hotel pays homage to the ancient inhabitants who used cross-ventilation techniques for optimal airflow. The rooms are terraced, replicating the cool terraces where the past residents used to gather.

A Glimpse Into the Past

The interiors of the hotel are adorned with whitewashed walls and vibrant red and blue murals, reminiscent of the artistry of the people who lived in the city 800 years ago. Fahmy emphasized the importance of dealing with heritage and restoring an archaeological ruin while maintaining the context of the ancient Islamic city.
