Discover Aqabat Shaar: The Stunning Mountain Road Saving Asir’s Beauty

Road of Wonders: Aqabat Shaar in Asir

Nestled in the heart of Saudi Arabia’s southwestern region of Asir, Aqabat Shaar stands as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. This iconic highway is celebrated for its breathtaking natural scenery and vital tourist attractions, making it a must-visit destination for residents and visitors alike.

Known for its rugged terrain, Aqabat Shaar used to pose significant challenges to access and mobility. To overcome this, a monumental project was undertaken over 40 years ago, under the reign of the late King Fahd bin Abdulaziz. The result? A road approximately 14 kilometers long, cutting through solid rock, with 11 tunnels and 32 bridges that navigate the challenging topography with ease.

Located a mere 23 kilometers from Abha city, the road through Aqabat Shaar connects the highlands of Sarat Asir with the coastal plain of Tihama. Beyond reducing travel time, this crucial artery plays a pivotal role in bolstering tourism in the region and enhancing the Kingdom’s standing as a global logistics hub.

Recently, Aqabat Shaar underwent significant development to enhance its utility and safety. The Roads General Authority spearheaded a comprehensive maintenance project, incorporating the latest international technologies and standards. The road reopened last year, after temporary closure, to much acclaim.

The recent maintenance work focused on achieving the highest standards of quality and safety. Modern lighting, clear road markings, informative signs, warning vibrations, and concrete barriers were all installed to improve road safety and meet the increasing demands of the region’s expanding network.

Aqabat Shaar remains a vital conduit for travel, commerce, and tourism, showcasing the natural splendor of Asir. As it continues to evolve with ongoing developments, this road serves as a beacon of progress, illuminating the way forward for Asir’s dynamic future.
