Saudi Arabia Leads International Efforts in Developing Fisheries Sector

In a show of leadership and unity, Saudi Arabia has taken the reins in spearheading international efforts to enhance the fisheries sector during its presidency of a special UN committee dedicated to the industry.

The 36th session of the committee, held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome and chaired by the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the FAO Mohammad Al-Ghamdi, concluded with Saudi Arabia highlighting its significant contributions to the sector’s development and sustainability over the past two years.

The Saudi Press Agency reported on the country’s commitment to bolstering the fisheries sector, with initiatives such as a national program aimed at protecting fish stocks, providing concessional loans to support small-scale fishermen in acquiring boats, and modernizing ports in the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf regions.

During the session, Al-Ghamdi emphasized Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role in leading and unifying global efforts to advance the fisheries sector. He mentioned that the committee’s initial focus was on implementing previous recommendations, followed by efforts to enhance member states’ performance and engage with key events to achieve their shared objectives.
