Preserving Traditional Crafts in Al-Baha Region

In the picturesque region of Al-Baha, the saying “A trade in hand ensures against poverty” resonates strongly among the elderly carpenters who make use of the diverse trees in the area. From juniper to sweet acacia, sidr, and neem, these craftsmen have a rich heritage of handicrafts that are an integral part of their cultural identity, passed down through generations.

With a keen eye on the future, locals are actively seeking to modernize and develop these traditional crafts to meet the challenges of today. Mohammed Al-Zahrani, an octogenarian carpenter, spoke about the demanding nature of his profession, which involves sourcing wood from the mountains and valleys of Al-Baha, drying and shaping it according to the clients’ specifications.

Al-Zahrani takes pride in his intricate wood engravings, often adorned with geometric patterns that showcase his skill and creativity. For him, carpentry is not just a livelihood but a legacy that he has passed down to his children and grandchildren.

Recently, Al-Zahrani displayed his work at the social activity center in the village of Wadi Al-Arja, offering a glimpse into the traditional woodworking techniques practiced by his ancestors. As the region embraces modernity, these craftsmen are determined to ensure that their traditional skills continue to thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of Al-Baha.
