Ithra Showcases Saudi Talent at Milan Design Week

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) made its mark at Milan Design Week from Apr. 16 to 21, marking its second appearance at the prestigious event in Italy. This cultural extravaganza is a significant entry in Italy’s cultural calendar.

Empowering Saudi Creative Talent

Ithra was established with the mission of nurturing Saudi creative talent. Noura Alzamil, the head of programs at the center, has witnessed the exponential growth of the country’s art scene. She is amazed by the rapid development and influence of Saudi art.

Alzamil emphasizes the importance of investing in Saudi minds to excel in the future. She believes in supporting young talents, professionals, and fostering a global conversation to propel the creative industry forward.

Material Library and Tanween Conference

Ithra boasts the region’s first ‘Material Library,’ showcasing a wide range of raw design materials for artists to experiment with. The center also organizes Tanween, a conference that highlights creative designs from university students and emerging talents from the region.

Exhibition at Milan Design Week

This year, Ithra presented an exhibition titled “From Routes to Roots” in collaboration with Isola, a Milan-based digital platform. The exhibition featured works by MENA artists in various mediums, showcasing how creatives are preserving heritage and promoting sustainability through circular design.

Participating creatives from the Levant, North Africa, and the Gulf showcased their innovative designs, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation. Lebanese designer Joe Bou Abboud paid homage to Qatari jewelry with his lighting fixtures, while Palestinian designer Lameice Abu Aker’s molecular-inspired vases stole the show.

Textile artworks, such as rugs inspired by traditional Gulf Sadu weaving, were also prominently featured in Ithra’s display. The exhibition received great acclaim, bridging the gaps between Saudi and international communities.
