Riyadh’s Misk Art Institute Unveils Groundbreaking “Solo Series” Exhibition

The Riyadh-based Misk Art Institute has set the art scene on fire with its latest exhibition, the “Solo Series,” currently taking place at Misk’s Prince Faisal bin Fahd Arts Hall until September 19. Showcasing the works of two of Saudi Arabia’s most influential artists, Yousef Jaha and Taha Alsabban, this event is a game-changer in the Kingdom’s art landscape.

A New Annual Tradition in the Making

Basmah Alshathry, director of the curatorial department at MAI, expressed the significance of the “Solo Series” as an annual celebration of Saudi artists. She told Arab News, “This series is a very important step, because we’re really trying to fill a gap that’s there: the lack of archives and documentation of extremely important Saudi artists that have contributed so much to the field.”

Yousef Jaha and Taha Alsabban: Pioneers in Saudi Art

Yousef Jaha and Taha Alsabban were natural choices for the “Solo Series” due to their immense contributions to the art world. Jaha, born in Makkah, made a name for himself early on, winning awards and becoming an art teacher. His solo exhibition, “Yearning for Rain,” showcases his deep connection to his environment and architectural heritage.

Alsabban, a self-taught painter from Makkah, has been a trailblazer in the Saudi art scene since the 1960s. His exhibition, “Muse’s Reverie,” delves into the role of women in society and commerce, reflecting his close ties to the females in his life.

A Tribute to Saudi Art Icons

Alshathry emphasized the importance of honoring artists like Jaha and Alsabban, who have paved the way for future generations. She stated, “These artists made an effort to actually create a lot of different opportunities for themselves and the people around them. And I think that’s what makes this series very important to us. It’s also a way of showing gratitude and appreciation.”

Looking Towards the Future

As the “Solo Series” unfolds, Alshathry believes it is a critical moment to reflect on the roots of Saudi art amidst the current wave of creativity and investment in the arts. She highlighted the need to recognize and study the contributions of pioneering artists like Jaha and Alsabban.
