The Design Doha Biennale: A Showcase of Arab Creativity
The Design Doha Biennale, running until Aug. 5, is a groundbreaking event that provides a platform for designers from across the Middle East to display their creativity. Countries such as Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and the West Bank are represented, offering a diverse range of projects.
Curated by Rana Beiruti, the central exhibition titled “Arab Design Now” features over 70 designers and 38 commissioned works. The show, located at M7 in Doha, highlights the rich heritage-based traditions and rituals of the Arab world, showcasing a blend of tradition and modern adaptation.
One of the standout pieces is “Tiamat” by Palestinian architects Elias and Yousef Anastas, which embodies the architectural heritage of Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon. The exhibition also includes works like the “Bridal Chest” by Jordanian collective Naqsh, reflecting traditional Palestinian wedding attire.
Bricklab and 6:AM collaborated on “An Archive for Modern Glass,” a towering column that combines modern development in Jeddah with Venetian glass techniques. Abeer Seikaly’s “Constellations 2.0” merges Venetian glassmaking with Bedouin weaving practices, creating a stunning chandelier.
In addition to “Arab Design Now,” visitors can explore five other exhibitions as part of the Design Doha Biennale, offering a comprehensive look at various aspects of design and culture. Artistic Director Glenn Adamson promises visitors a profound and immersive experience that tells a captivating story.
