Riyadh’s Beit Hail Festival Showcases Rich Culinary Traditions
The third annual Beit Hail Festival, themed “Our Home is Your Home … Oh, My Beloved,” is a celebration of the region’s vibrant culinary heritage, with a special focus on Hail’s famous klaija dessert.
Klaija, a traditional pastry deeply rooted in Saudi culture, has captivated visitors with its variety of shapes and preparation methods.
In an interview with the Saudi Press Agency, 55-year-old klaija artisan Umm Mohammed shared her journey of perfecting the craft since the age of 7, using charcoal for baking and constantly innovating over the past 45 years.
Umm Mohammed emphasized the importance of each maker’s unique spice blend in creating the distinctive taste of klaija.
Another klaija expert, Umm Badr, with 20 years of experience, highlighted the significance of continuous practice in mastering the art of klaija-making.
“This craft evolves over time,” she said. “Klaija-making has become a vital source of income for participating families.”
Umm Badr has showcased her klaija creations at various heritage and tourism festivals in the region, receiving widespread acclaim for her skill and expertise.
